Walter McGee and Clarence Flick confessed the kidnapping of Miss Mary McElroy as a federal grand jury indicted them and eight others in a plot. The week saw Miss McElroy released for a $30,000 ransom after 29 hours’ captivity near Shawnee Kansas, with arrests from Amarillo Texas and indictments naming ten involved individuals.
A nationwide manhunt for ten escaped convicts from the Kansas penitentiary spread through Oklahoma on June 3 as officers pursued small bands of escapees. An eleventh convict was arrested yesterday, with reports of a bank robbery possible involving suspects with a Pawhuska license plate. Witnesses identified Kenneth Conn as one of two men who abducted and robbed a pair near Malvern Arkansas.
The senate approved by 48 to 20 a measure allowing all contracts to be settled in legal tender, removing the gold payment requirement for public and private obligations. The House had passed it. awaiting Vice President Garner and Speaker Rainey signatures before going to the White House. Two modification attempts were defeated.

United Dty Forces report communications from Sen Neely and Gov Cornwall urging repeal support and free voting on the eighteenth amendment. Postmaster General Farley cited among Democratic leaders pushing for repeal. Neely fully concurs with allowing members to vote their conscience without party pressure. Cornwall forwarded an editorial from his paper endorsing the Democratic call to submit the proposal to the people.
Bluefield will host the eighth annual Southwestern Virginia Inc regional chamber meeting drawing over 5 000 visitors from the Mountain Empire. Dr John Preston McConnell of Radford will preside. events span 11am to post parade awards with a Miss Mountain Empire crown and a band contest at Wade Stadium and nearby venues.
Jimmie Mattern, flying the Century of Progress from Floyd Bennett Field, cleared Newfoundland seven hours after takeoff and reached Lewisporte at 11 30 am EST. The Texan plans a Paris stop within 27 hours, then Moscow, Berlin, as fog and rain challenge the transoceanic trek, aiming to beat the Post Gatty record.
Illinois will record its decision on proposed repeal of the 18th amendment Monday. Militant repealists call it the fourth referendum on prohibition in a decade while repeal advocates in both major parties push for a strong turnout at the Illinois convention in Springfield on July 10. Dry groups plan to finish campaign among churchmen tomorrow.
An earthquake of considerable intensity was felt by residents in the outlying sections of San Francisco with downtown observers noting a slight tremor. No damage was reported as two distinct shocks occurred, the second severe, and local in character with nearby cities unaffected.
Washington June 3 senators on the banking committee seriously study legislation to curb concentration of control by Morgan interests in industry and finance. Pecora plans a comprehensive report with possible law recommendations as new evidence shows Morgan firms control about 16.5 percent of annual gross earnings of the four big United Corporation utilities. The panel weighs extending inquiry to Morgan partners income tax returns as Davis objects and the committee considers present findings.
Charleston WV June 3. State Superintendent W W Trent ruled local boards of education had no authority after May 22 and called a June 14 15 meeting of county superintendents to discuss the new county unit system. He noted the act abolishing local boards took effect from passage and warned against obligations beyond July 1 when the new system begins.
Mrs Pattie Willis South of Nicholsville Kentucky aged 81 was photographed with Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt after a luncheon at the White House. She declared her aim to reach heaven and plans to attend President Roosevelt's church tomorrow.
Judge Walter H. Evans of the United States customs court ruled against the special tariff provisions in the 1932 revenue act applied to coal imports from Great Britain and Germany. The decision orders the return of thousands of dollars collected since June 1932 at $2 per ton, saying the provision is discriminatory and could affect treaty powers. The ruling covers coal from England via Boston by George E. Warren Corp and from Germany via Bridgeport, Conn by Domestic Fuel Corp.
Governor Kump announced four major appointments to the public service commission, the board of control, and the health department. He named two education board members and four road commission advisories, deferring a road commissioner appointment. Senate confirmed all selections. John J. D. Preston to the public service commission for six years ending 1939. James A. Chambers to the board of control for the unexpired term ending 1935. The Rev W M Snead of this city was fatally injured in a Bland County Virginia automobile wreck Saturday afternoon. His brother in law W T Peters was seriously hurt and E H Osborne bruised and shocked. All three, residents of Midway, are at St Luke's hospital with Snead said to have a broken back and Peters a fractured left thigh. The trio, returning from Wytheville where they worked as paperhangers, were driving on the Lakes to Florida highway when the car turned over between Rocky Gap and South Gap. They suspect striking a rock. x rays to set full details. They are well known in Bluefield.
Harvey Chapman a 20 year old swimmer drowned in the Elk River in Charleston West Virginia. His body was recovered about an hour later.
After eight weeks of session in Charleston the legislature adjourned sine die. Major bills passed include empowering cities to levy direct charges for fire and police protection, a school aid distribution plan, and an administration bill raising inheritance tax rates while narrowing exemptions. The session also created a Negro board of education to oversee appointments at Negro institutions.
Henry Hart, 25, colored, sought for Vernon Moore murder, was captured by Constable John Correll on Jim Lybrook’s property a half mile east of Pearisburg. Russell Armstrong alerted police, Hart returned to Bluefield after consented surrender, questioned by Prosecuting Attorney Walter V. Ross, to be arraigned Monday. Moore shot five times Thursday night at Kingslow Drug Store and died Friday at Providence hospital.

Washington reports the administration railroad bill reached the point of passage in the House with no major changes as 80 members were absent. A record vote is set for Monday after Representative Collins blocked passage over quorum concerns. The measure creates a coordinator to cut rail costs during a two year anti trust suspension and includes limited amendments.
More than six hundred recruits for a federal reforestation camp in southwestern Virginia arrived by special Norfolk and Western trains. The first 204 men detrained at Salem for Catawba, the second group at Narrows for Bastian, Bland county, and the third group over 200 went to Bandy.
