Justice files lawsuit against Carter Bank in West Virginia
Gov Jim Justice his family and several of his businesses sue Carter Bank & Trust in U S District Court Beckley seeking 421 million alleging anti competitive behavior breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duties among other claims. The suit also seeks a declaratory judgment over 2017 loan modifications and asserts about 368 million of debt remains with Carter Bank from a 775 million loan portfolio in 2016. It ties the dispute to the late Worth Carter who died in 2017 and to financing arrangements connected to those loans.

Vaccine drive at Cole Chevy Mountain Festival in Bluefield
Vaccinations will be offered at the 10 day Cole Chevy Mountain Festival from Friday through Sunday June 13. The program runs six of the festival days at the midway with participants receiving two free carnival ride tickets under an agreement between the Chamber of Commerce of the Two Virginias and the Great James H Drew Exhibition.

New City Board picks shake Bluefield leadership
Treyvon Simmons, 24, captured the District I seat, defeating incumbent Vice Mayor Barbara Thompson-Smith to become one of Bluefield’s youngest board members. Dr. Daniel Wells won the District II seat, succeeding Robb Williams who moved to Princeton. Mayor Ron Martin ran unopposed and welcomed the diverse new Board taking office August 1.

Cigarette tax proposal advances in Tazewell County
In Tazewell Virginia Eastern District Supervisor Charlie Stacy reports a proposed 10 cent per pack cigarette tax increase drew only two speakers at a public hearing. The board will finalize the budget at the June 29 meeting with a 40 cent cap still possible but may be reduced. Stacy noted one speaker opposed targeting smokers and a business owner urged a lower levy given WV’s stance.
