Military Doctors Going To Salvador
President Reagan said he will send 20 to 25 military doctors and technicians to El Salvador to aid civilian and military casualties, in consultation with Congress, while denying any escalation of U.S. involvement. Secretary Shultz announced Thomas Pickering will replace Hinton as ambassador to El Salvador and Richard Stone will serve as the new regional envoy. House Democrats fault the shift, arguing it blocks talks to end covert aid to Nicaraguan rebels.
