One vote margin in Greenbrier Senate race tightens canvass
State Sen. Ralph Williams D Greenbrier clings to a one vote lead over challenger Andrew McClung in the 11th District as officials prepare Friday canvass. McClung declines to concede and may seek a recount. 12 ballots challenged could sway the outcome. Williams cites campaign gaps and sewer district publicity as factors.

Primary Election 1982: Incumbents Fall in West Virginia
In the 1982 primaries, three incumbent senators from West Virginia lost their bids, including two conservatives, while the Senate finance chair Ralph Williams led narrowly by one vote in the 11th District. House incumbents faced heavy losses with eight Democrats defeated, and one of the Legislature’s two black members, Del. Booker T. Stephens, failing to win renomination. Other leaders and incumbents survived or were renominated, with races across Boone, Lincoln, Logan, Mingo, Cabell, Raleigh, and Kanawha counties shaping the new legislative balance.
