The U S Senate approves a rental bill to extend rent controls until February 29 with a provision allowing landlords a 15 percent increase if tenants consent. Debate features opposition over the increase and a vote to remove it failing. House supports a similar measure.
Jay Emerson of Pullman Washington Kiwanis president told 234 Kiwanis members in Bluefield that Communists seek to undermine U S government. He said Russians lack means to wage war and relied on U S aid in World War II. Emerson claimed he infiltrated Communist groups to expose strategies.
In Pine Bluff and surrounding bayou country a violent tornado killed at least 34 people, injured hundreds, and left many homeless. Rescue efforts shifted to rehabilitation as about 15 suspected missing persons were accounted for in hospitals or with friends.
The Associated Press reports 903 deaths across the nation during Memorial Day weekend. Traffic accidents caused 228 deaths, 62 drowned, and 213 miscellaneous fatalities, including two major airline crashes and 42 tornado victims in Arkansas and Oklahoma. States list traffic, drowning, and miscellaneous deaths from 6 p.m. Thursday to midnight Sunday.
Senator Theo G. Bilbo of Mississippi will travel to New Orleans for the first of two planned operations to replace part of his jaw bone after a malignant growth caused part of the jaw to be removed months earlier. The procedure follows prior surgery and aims to restore jaw function.

Eastern Air Lines announced start of tomorrow four hour non stop service from New York to Miami using new type 60 passenger Lockheed Constellations. One daily non stop each way, and one daily with a Washington stop. A recent model set a Miami New York record of 3 hours 29 minutes.
In Redding California on June 2 John E Post of Tacoma landed a small private plane on the Pit river bridge after circling to avoid bad weather. His sister Mrs Geraldine Grunwoldt accompanied him as motorists halted traffic and cleared the bridge for the landing.
Investigators report a tail elevator failure in the Eastern Air Lines DC-4 crash near Port Deposit Maryland killing 53. CAB says plane was level at 4000 feet before diving and crashing inverted. Senate calls for renewed air safety hearings and probes into the two recent disasters.
Washington june 2 mayor James M Curley of Boston lost his appeal to the supreme court today from a mail fraud conviction and a six to 18 month jail term plus 1000 fine The court left the judgment in effect while granting a hearing in a separate school prayer case The 25 day window to seek reconsideration may push execution to autumn and Curley vows to stay in office despite possible jail time.

In Genoa Virginia on June 2 Mrs Louise Miller 30 wife of Shirley Miller Valley Housing employee battered her six month old Shirley Louise to death with an ax struck her three year old daughter Gloria Jean with the same instrument and hanged herself in the Miller home neighbors found them after a cry was heard Gloria Jean was taken to Rockingham Memorial hospital in serious condition coroner Dr F L Byers ruled murder and death by own action.
John L. Lewis dismissed his 200 man policy committee ending formal prospects for an accord in the soft coal industry. Negotiations with operators representing 75 percent of the industry collapsed after a 35 cent hourly wage demand was rejected and a 15 cent counter offer was refused. A new contract must be negotiated by June 30 to avoid a government mandated shutdown and miners will not work without a contract.
In Edinburg Pa two workers Merle Craven and Robert Downing were killed by twin blasts at the American Cyanamid dynamite mixing house causing a 220 foot square structure to collapse and injuring nine others. Jack Cameron remained missing eight hours after the first blast. The explosions were heard over ten miles and wrecked glass in New Castle nine miles away. The cause was not determined.
Gus Colon Langley of Asheboro seeks state compensation for more than two years unjustly spent in jail and prison in the 1930s after nearly facing the electric chair for the murder of Lonnie G. Russell. Langley, who was on death row with three gubernatorial reprieves, appeared before Paroles Commissioner Hathaway Cross in Raleigh for the innocence pay bill. The board will draft recommendations for the governor and Council of State.
