Council Rejects Local Option Election Petition
The city council refused a writ of mandamus to compel a July 14 local option election on the liquor question. Attorney J H Gadd said Judge Tanner would hear the petition Friday. the council cited budget and funding constraints as reasons for rejection. Citizens offered to guarantee election costs, but the council held members personally responsible for any debt.

Court completes vote recount in five precincts
The county court finished the primary election recount across five precincts in Maat Silver district. D. T. Carr widened his lead in the justice of the peace race to 16 votes over O. B. Susong after gains in several precincts. no changes to other races. The court estimates about fifteen days to finish the recount.

State police link possible between taxi driver murder and beating
Welch West Virginia June 2 State police say a link may exist between the beating of Miss Lucille Van Meter 28 of Northfork and the slaying of J Newt Akers 48 year old taxicab driver. Akers body was found May 12 on an embankment with a dozen bullet wounds. Van Meter was found on a lawn apparently tossed from a car with a rope around her neck and signs of severe beating. Police report the woman may have been forced into a car with two men.

Women's Chest Clinic Planned by Local Clubs
The Syinjor and Junior Women's clubs with the West Virginia Tuberculosis and Health Association sponsor a chest clinic this week in the Memorial building. It will run Thursday and Friday to check for tuberculosis and other chest diseases among county people. Dr J A Ford of Untington will conduct exams. Mary Virginia Quill will organize plans for tuberculosis outreach and travel to West Virginia to arrange future funding.

Two Die in Route 62 Auto Crash in Virginia
Two men died and two others were injured in a Monday evening automobile crash on U S Route 62 between Jaeger and Justice. The deceased are Hart Compton, 28, of Candlewax, Va, and Harris of near Saewer. Injured are Arnold Brown, 23, of Drill, Va, and Noah Talley of Lone Jack. Harris died instantly. Compton later died at a local hospital from a fractured skull. Brown suffers a broken back and other injuries. The men were riding “young in” Harris’s car, returning to Red Bird near Seeger, when the wreck occurred. Compton’s body was taken to Fanning Funeral Home in Welch for burial preparations. Funeral arrangements for Compton had not been completed.
