Abandonment case bound over in Virginia hearing

A Bland County grand jury will decide on a case against Lorne and Cassandra Cooper charged with attempted child abandonment after a preliminary hearing. Commonwealth Attorney Mickey Newberry withdrew four felony conspiracy counts stating evidence did not support them. Candy Cooper testifies about being abandoned on highway

An 11 year old girl known as Candy recalls being placed out of a car by her stepfather Lorne Cooper on Interstate 77 while traveling from Woodbridge, Virginia to Heritage, South Carolina, left on the median as her mother cried and tried to comfort her. Mobilizing supporters against Tazewell budget cuts

A coalition of human service agencies in Tazewell County mobilizes supporters to protest a proposed 1992 93 budget cut. A public hearing is scheduled June 11 at 6 p.m. in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courtroom. Speakers must register by 4 p.m. June 11. The cuts could cost $518 000 in state federal and private funds and threaten programs and jobs including nine county employees and 45 senior companions.
