Citadel graduate Shaffrey tops class with honors in biology
Christopher Ignatius Shaffrey of Bluefield graduates magna cum laude from The Citadel with a Bachelor of Science in biology. He earned dean's list every semester, joined ROTC, and is credited with multiple honors and activities. Dawn E. Carter of Bluefield makes Shepherd College dean's list for 1982 spring semester, among 289 students honored.

Feeder cattle prices slip across regions amid mixed pasture conditions
Pasture conditions were fair to poor in many areas with rain failing to lift feeder cattle demand. Locally prices fell about 1 to 2 dollars with various weight ranges for medium frame steers and Holstein types. slaughter steers and heifers weakened up to 2 dollars while dairy and utility cows posted mixed declines. In Virginia, slaughter cow prices rose early then slipped midweek, pressured by a weaker carcass market.

Farm Livestock Prices Mixed At Regional Markets And Dublin Sale
Slaughter lambs weakened with prices $1.00 to $4.00 lower. Local lambs 95-125 lbs brought $67-70, 85-125 lbs $60, 70-85 lbs $51. Slaughter ewes sold $1218.50. Dublin sale May 28 saw Choice and Prime 95-125 lbs lambs $66.50-67.25 cwt. Veal and carcass prices fell. Hog prices rose $2 but late activity slowed. Bluegrass Market at Lewisburg sold 379 head for $67,400. Bulls, cows, calves and hogs quoted across multiple classes. Alderson sale totaled $63,902. Overall, mixed movement with gains in hogs and pressure on veal.

Synthetic fuel plant cost estimate balloons to 2.3 billion
Energy Department told Congress that the Solvent Refined Coal I plant in Newman Kentucky could cost 2.3 billion to build, more than triple the original estimate. The Reagan administration opposes government financing but may support 20 to 25 million for continued studies.
