Thetis Submarine Missing Near Liverpool With 53 Crew
British submarine Thetis, 265 feet long costing 1 638 000 dollars, left Birkenhead for a test near the Irish Sea. A hole in her side and loss of two escape hatches prompted a large rescue effort as crew of 53 and 20 staff watched naval vessels and air forces search the Mersey mouth and north Welsh coast.
