Dow Falls Sharply As Rates Rise Toward Fed Move

The Dow Jones average dropped 50.59 to 5,642.80 as higher rates spooked traders. Analysts pointed to comments by former Fed official Lyle Gramley about a 50 basis point rate hike at the July 3 meeting, following strong housing data and a 6.7 percent April rise in new home sales. Bond prices sank, the 30 year yield neared 7 percent, and the stock market saw more decliners than advancers on light volume.
