Belcher Band Mill Transformed Bluefield Lumber Town
From 1926 to 1960 Bluefield thrived as a lumber hub anchored by J B Belcher and his band mill north of the Norfolk Southern yards. The plant opened July 2, 1926 employing 35 workers, generating a 50 000 to 60 000 dollar payroll, and producing about 5 million board feet in year one. The operation created a city within a city with company houses and a on site store, reshaping Bluefield’s economy and identity. Although renowned as a railroad center, lumber rose to king status during this era.
