Secretary of Welfare John Gardner announced a full scale investigation into adding prescription drug costs to Medicare. A blue ribbon task force will report within six months after studying drug prescribing patterns payment methods and the merits of generic versus brand name drugs for older Americans.

A 54 year old Bluefield woman Mrs. Brock Hamilton McMullin was found dead by hanging at her Woodlawn Manor apartment 601 Loudon Street at 2 15 p m Wednesday. Police Sgt Homer Tabor and Patrolman H N Harding investigated. She lived alone and left no known motive. She is survived by two sons three sisters two brothers and one grandchild. The body was taken to Hawkins Funeral Home in Bluefield with funeral arrangements incomplete.
Barbara Harless an 18 year old Jaeger High School student shot herself in a school restroom. Police ruled the death personal safety related noting a note to her boyfriend and a concealed .38 pistol found beside her. State Trooper Hedrick investigated. Funeral arrangements pending.
Geneva conference participants from 70 nations, led by Robert M. Hutchins, issued 11 points including strengthening the United Nations and universal membership for Red China. They urged neutralization of Southeast Asia and an end to the cold war while noting the Vietnam war is at best a mistake and that coexistence of Communists and non-Communists is necessary but not sufficient.

Washington AP. Farm product prices rose two percent in the period ending May 15 reversing an eight month decline. The Agriculture Department cited higher hog and cattle prices as the main drivers with declines in lettuce tomatoes cotton and eggs offsetting some gains. The mid May level stood four percent below the prior year and eight percent below the peak last August.
