Fate of Cyprus internee Jews in doubt amid UN orders
London May 31 The immediate fate of 24 000 Jews interned at Cyprus is uncertain due to conflicting Jewish and British readings of the UN cease fire order. A Foreign Office spokesman said the situation is under consideration. Maurice Rosetti of the Jewish Agency said Israel authorities will continue to arrange shipments to remove internees, noting 500 already moved and two transports in a Cyprus port. He argued immigrants, not soldiers, are the target of the UN wording and that Jews in Cyprus are regarded as immigrants. Britain has faced cost concerns over Palestinian statehood while allowing some transit possibilities for those released from Cyprus.
