Allied lines resist as German forces push south toward Paris after seizing Chateau-Thierry. Foch withholds reserves while Germans claim thousands of prisoners and guns taken since Monday. Air bombing and Allied defense along Soissons to Rheims focus remains on flank stability.
Rene Renault president of the army committee of the chamber of deputies and accompanying Premier Clemenceau told Marcel Fintan of Echo de Paris that as the day advanced the situation grew more favorable. He spoke on arrival at the front.
Drafted men who claim sincere objections to military service and refused noncombatant duty will be segregated at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. A special board will determine sincerity and, if found, furloughs to work on farms at private pay. Money earned above sustenance goes to the Red Cross. Only a small number affected.
London May 21 The Germans press the Champagne offensive and have reached the west bank of the Marne on a ten mile front. They have not yet entered Chateau Thierry but attack heavily there and to the north. Rheims area is not clear though it may fall soon. French lines were pushed back to Noyon to Soissons. Germans seek to extend attacks east of Rheims with limited details available.
A heavy air raid on Zeebrugge Thursday night caused a huge explosion around 1 AM, with flames towering into the sky. A Flushing dispatch to the Telegraff says a powder magazine likely detonated in the blast.
Secretary McAdoo challenged Representative Kitchen of North Carolina to retract his remark that a polishers lobby for repeal of the zone system influenced the push for revenue legislation. Kitchen said he did not think McAdoo cared about publications, but claimed a lobby had affected some in whom he had faith.
London dispatch reports growing unrest in Bohemia with riots echoing 1848 uprisings. Crowds set fire to barracks and the city hall after police brutality incidents and eight officers burned to death. In Kong locals tore down the Austrian flag and raised the Bohemian banner.
Paris May 31 reports place the German advance at Le Charmel two miles north of the Marne with a front spanning Trem Chavigny to Rheims. Allied reserves arrive, enabling planned counter actions as Gen Foch and Petain coordinate defense and anticipated counterattack.
Richmond May 11 Governor Westmoreland Davis is confined to the executive mansion with whooping cough, officials said today. The illness keeps him from public duties during the period.
An American returning from England reports a German submarine lying in wait for a trans port carrying U S troops was rammed and sunk by a large British liner off the Irish coast in May. The ship hit the U boat amidships after torpedo firing and depth charges by accompanying destroyers. The submarine surfaced, or possibly was forced afloat, before being rammed in view of soldiers on deck.
Officially announced today that 980000 men will be called to the colors in June. They will be ordered to report June 24 with camp assignments and apportionments yet to be determined and withheld for the moment.

London reports from Zurich say the White Head Torpedo Works at St Poelten in Austria was destroyed by fire. Vienna papers claim sabotage by Italian workers at the plant.
