Reports describe a fatal crush at Hodynsky plain during a royal banquet, with over a thousand dead and injured as peasants surged for food. Troops and firemen cleared wreckage, while officials counted 1,138 dead and mourners searched for relatives amid chaotic scenes.
Mrs Ella Octavia Witten of Jamesport Missouri travels to Virginia to attend the unveiling of a monument to her brother Colonel William Brown who led the 45th Virginia Regiment and fell at New Market. The ceremony honors Brown and Virginia comrades in arms from Tazewell County.
The notice corrects a prior report saying the reception by the Presbyterian ladies occurred at Mr Campbell’s Higginbotham avenue on Friday night. Mrs William A Campbell was absent due to the death of her aunt Miss Kate Goering Haller in Wytheville on May 24 1896, a bereavement already noted in the May 29 issue.

In Richmond the Richmond team beat Roanoke 4 to 2. Lynchburg defeated Petersburg 6 to 9. Norfolk lost to Portsmouth 6 to 14. Richmond edged Roanoke 8 to 5. Petersburg outscored ee 6 and 20 to 0. Norfolk and Portsmouth battled 9 to 12 innings with Portsmouth winning 9 to 7.
The Bluefield club built runs until players tired and then walked the bases, while the visitors kept the scoreless inning pace. The key feature was Bluefield’s easy blanking of the innings, with the game ending as a decisive display of control.

A colored man named Heston, a Republican convention delegate from Welch, leaned from a moving train and struck his head on a caboose at Eckman siding. He was knocked unconscious but recovered quickly and returned home in Eckman.

McDowell county Republican mass convention at Elk Horn May 2 adjourned to Welch May 30 drawing over a thousand attendees. Disputes over whether the Elk Horn gathering was a mass or regular delegate convention produced two parallel conventions with roughly equal attendance. The Effler faction published its official report listing delegates to state, congressional, judicial, senatorial and legislative conventions.
Charles Shuff bookkeeper for the Goodwill company died by self inflicted pistol shot at Goodwill on Saturday night. Body found Sunday morning in a chair under his porch. He left home Saturday saying he would take a walk. a search party found him. He was around 38 years old and survived by a wife and several children.
A well attended 4 pm YMCA meeting featured spirited singing led by Mr. Auger. A quartet including Mrs. Kephart Miss Ruth Samuels and Messrs Auger and Hudson performed. Rev Brown of the Lutheran church delivered the address on preparing for eternity using John II as scripture.
Mrs Atkinson wife of F W Atkinson died at her East End home on Saturday evening. Her remains were taken to Pocahontas for burial on the noon train with many friends, funeral services led by Rev T C Shuler and assisted by Rev French of Pocahontas.
The first annual Burke's Garden Academy commencement concluded with high order recitations and speeches led by Prof. 8 Greever. Prizes went to George Rhody for best declaimer and Miss Tillie Moss for best recitation. Friday speaker E L Greever urged citizenship, education, and patriotism. visitors attended from Tazewell Bland Marion and other sections. OKR adds a furniture ad.
