Thirty two passengers and five crew members aboard an Eastern Air Lines Electra recounts of a hijacking to Cuba. The lone hijacker, described as slim and in a dark suit, led the plane toward Havana as Cuban soldiers kept guard.
Britain’s Conservative government announced sweeping austerity measures including a 40 percent interest rate hike and a 10 percent sales tax increase. A 10 percent customs surcharge and budget cuts of 840 million dollars follow amid rising imports and slipping exports.
A lone gunman attempted to hijack a Mohawk Airlines plane with co pilot Emil Spadoni held at gunpoint. He claimed to be acting over a estranged marriage and planned to end his life after the first flight. Sheriff and staff urged surrender without gas. he spoke by intercom as negotiations continued.

A 57 year old man from Roderfield Fred Workman faces a murder charge after a human skeleton was found near Premier. Workman had waived a preliminary hearing on attempted murder and is now charged with two murders related to the June discovery of Claude Wills skeleton in a wooded area near Premier. He has prior sentences for attempted murder and moonshine offenses.
The postwar hearing involving Trooper J B Atwood and Russell County Deputy Jack Banner was postponed after both men were wounded in a May 27 exchange near Haysi Virginia. Banner remained hospitalized and free on bond on a shooting with intent to kill charge. Banner's family also filed a similar count against Atwood. The Clintwood hearing had been moved from June 20 to a later date.
Preliminary hearing for E H Lige Tucker Bluefield former warden and railway special agent charged in the July 12 shooting of 15 year old Joseph P Barlow was postponed again as Barlow remains in hospital unable to testify Tucker told police the shooting followed a complaint about a prowler.
