Two Miners Killed in Separate McDowell Accidents
Louis Michael Kraje Jr 45 of Thorpe and Warren Harper 46 of Caretta died in separate McDowell County incidents Monday morning. Kraje, a U S Steel No 10 mine employee at Gary, suffered crushing injuries in a shuttle car accident about 3 am. Harper died after a conveyor belt accident at Island Creek Coal Co No 1 mine in Bartley at 8:45 am while greasing the belt. Kraje was a union official and community member. Harper belonged to the United Mine Workers and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Both bodies were taken to Douglas Mortuary in Welch.

Basil Asbury 50 of Richlands arrested and charged with murder and malicious assault after a early morning shooting in Raven. Robert E Lee 32 of Tazewell killed. Cary Dell Wells 27 of Raven seriously hurt with arm and back wounds. Autopsy ordered. motive unknown. Wells employed by Asbury. Lee a General Shale worker. Sheriff Davis noted pickup incident and that Asbury was taken into custody at the Dixie Hotel around 6 a.m. in Tazewell County.
