CDC data show 47,095 new AIDS cases diagnosed last year up from 45,499 in 1991. Women accounted for 6,642 cases, up 9.8 percent, while men totaled 40,453, with heterosexual transmission increasing as a major factor.

Kenneth Gann, CEO, told Bluefield area leaders that CCAir is not leaving Mercer and Raleigh County airports. He said a decision to exit will not occur unless market performance worsens and urged community support to boost Mercer County usage while noting past fare wars and EAS considerations.
GTE South filed with the West Virginia PSC to review a tariff change affecting Remote Call Forwarding customers. The PSC suspended the filing for 270 days and referred the case to the Division of Administrative Law Judges after a complaint from Lynne Turner of L&B Communications Consulting.
National Coal Association President Richard Lawson called the judge’s ruling a big victory for operators and urged the government to end the witch hunt as MSHA and Labor Secretary Reich pledge to continue the civil charges from 1991. Ed Hugler said the case would be pursued.
