Population shifts in Virginia counties from 1980 to 1985

Census figures show Buchanan County dropping to 36 500 in 1985 down 3.8 percent while Giles falls from 17 810 to 17 600. Wythe loses 22 residents to 25 500 in 1985. Fairfax remains the state’s largest locality at 687 800. Highland is the smallest with 3 000 residents.

Prices rise barely while spending grows and savings fall

Americans’ personal income in June rose 0.1 percent as spending gained 0.6 percent. Personal savings fell from 151.6 to 133.2 billion dollars. Gasoline and food prices edged higher while housing costs climbed 0.5 percent. Durable goods orders jumped 2.1 percent, the largest gain in months, as factory orders rose for civilian and defense goods. The CPI index stood at 327.9, with the basket priced at 32.79 dollars in June 1986 compared to 32.23 in June 1985.

Senate panel approves increased cigarette tax

The Senate Finance Committee voted to raise the federal cigarette tax by 8 cents a pack as part of deficit-reduction efforts, while a House panel rejected the proposal. The session also touched on Gramm Rudman budget politics and local fire response policies in Princeton.

Strike Cuts Hit Mines and Taxes Debate Rages

The strike threatens operations idling several mines in Wyoming and McDowell counties with hundreds laid off while others stay open. Separately a Senate finance panel votes to raise the cigarette tax to 24 cents per pack by Oct 1 to raise about 5 billion for three years, despite opposition from some senators.
