A 6 year old girl died when a four room Covington Virginia home burned early Sunday. The Johnson family escaped. Edwin W. Johnson and Mrs. Johnson were hospitalized with burns. Brenda Grace Johnson was found deceased in the bedroom. Linda Gayle Johnson, age 4, was treated and released. The cause is undetermined but likely began in the living room.

Six prisoners overpowered a guard at the Danville city prison farm in Virginia Sunday night as Capt. Fletcher Edwards opened a barracks door for cooks. The six escaped after grabbing the guard. none were believed armed.
Mrs. Mariam Grinnen Dickinson of 2006 Reid Avenue Bluefield was found shot to death at home Sunday afternoon authorities ruled the wound self inflicted. Dickinson widow of W W Dickinson long associated with Pocahontas Land Company, led Bluefield civic groups including the Girl Scout Council and Garden Club and was active in bird sanctuary work. A Wise County man, Harold Whetsel Brooks, 26, of Saint Paul, died in a single vehicle crash Saturday night one mile south of Holston in Washington County near U S 19. The incident increased Virginia’s 1961 highway toll to 418, up from 409 on the same date a year earlier.
A woman shot by her 52 year old estranged husband at a fruit market in Galax Virginia was in fair condition after surgery. The husband R Palmer Williams of Woodlawn Rt 2 died after shooting himself during a confrontation with a police officer.
