Golfer Watson contends to become the first to win back to back British Opens or to set a record as he seeks historic triumph at the Open Championship in a tense, crowded field.
A Potomac News survey of 800 registered voters conducted July 11 to 19 finds about 75 percent support a woman's right to obtain an abortion. Responses cross demographics. 62 percent of 107 legislators also back the right, while over 70 percent oppose a state ban.
Wiseguys knuckle heads and Stooge fans gathered in Trevose for the third annual Three Stooges convention organized by Phyllis and Frank Reighter and Gary Lassin. More than 900 fans attended the two day event with Curly sound alike contests and film showings.
The Islamic Republic News Agency says authorities confiscated hundreds of hand woven silk carpets before export, finding jewelry stuffed inside. The shipment, the largest in a decade, valued at tens of millions plus hundreds of thousands in jewelry. Intelligence teams uncovered 774 carpets across two southwestern provinces last week, destined for boats off Bushehr.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for partly cloudy skies today with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and highs in the mid 80s. Tonight will be mostly clear with lows in the mid 60s.
Glenwood Park United Methodist Home leaders dispute West Virginia Health Department licensing standards citing a state law favoring graded licenses. The Health Facilities Evaluation Division notes two category deficiencies underpinning a C rating and an overall ungraded license, while industry officials call Glenwood one of the state’s best facilities.
The home earned A ratings in past years but was ungraded this year. The license was issued in July and the facility received C ratings in nursing services and dietetic services, while previous years showed A ratings in all but one category. In 1986 the nursing services rating was B.
In Duffield Virginia state police reported no trouble as the United Mine Workers offered new proposals to break a three and a half month strike with Pittston Coal Group Inc. Pittston President Michael Odom said the company would study the offers but noted little progress. The union urged Sunday work concessions and direct face to face talks. Odom dismissed both ideas as not serious contract proposals.
In Duffield Virginia after a four hour federal judge led session the United Mine Workers and The Pittston Co resumed contract talks with mediation. Pittston pressed for separate rooms while the union favored direct dialogue but a written agreement now puts talks under federal mediation. John Farrell and Mike Odom represented Pittston while Joe Corcoran led the UMW. The modest Duffield site sits near the Virginia Kentucky line with few local amenities and a 32 month strike ongoing.
Union support stands behind Trumka as violence flares at non union mines in West Virginia and Virginia. At Slab Fork a small camp near Rum Creek hosts makeshift living with shavings and cedar air. Pickets number about six as Bethel Purkey voices resolve, calling the strike a new beginning or an end, nonviolent but defiant.
