Crash pelican released to wild after stumble on rocks

California brown pelican Crash, once famed for colliding with a car, was released at Big Corona Beach. She immediately stumbled into rocks but recovered, then soared. Wildlife director Debbie McGuire cited reporter distraction for the fall as she resumed flight after the release.

Rice stays firm on no ceasefire in Mideast visit

Physician plans return to region from Lebanon

Dr Assaad Mounzer, a former Bluefield area physician who aided Lebanon, says via Rotary Club contact he is on his way home to resume practice at Tazewell Community Hospital. Steve Lilly, Rotary president, quoted in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph on arrival plans.

Byrd boosts funds for King Coal Highway and Coalfields Expressway

U S Senator Robert Byrd has added five million dollars to support construction on both the King Coal Highway and the Coalfields Expressway. The money, approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee, advances to the full Senate where Mercer and McDowell counties expect quick approval. Officials say the funding addresses rising highway costs and immediate safety needs.

Tazewell woman marks 31 years of blood donations

Libby Bowman of Burkes Garden has donated 12 gallons of blood at Tazewell Community Hospital over 31 years. She began on Sept 3, 1975 after a family friend was in a car crash, and has contributed at least four times yearly, keeping donor cards to track her total.
