The UATE trap meet began yesterday with gun crews ready for hard shooting today. Trapgrounds are in splendid condition at Tazewell East McKeesport and Mount Hope, where local shooters shared opening day honors between teams.
Seventy three shooters entered the West Virginia State Trapshooting meet at Bluefield Gun club with entries from West Virginia and neighboring states. The opening program featured 100 singles 50 handicap and 26 doubles with high gun scores of 98 and 97 in various classes. A large crowd watched Mrs. Bunny Sanders dominate the women’s field while A N Davis impressed despite a missing arm. Tonight the association meets at the West Virginian hotel with Shott delivering the welcome address and plans for the 1931 tournament set.
A Junkers air taxi from Walcot Air Lines crashed four miles south of Gravesend after leaving Le Touquet. Six passengers died including Viscountess Ednam and Mrs. Henrik Loeffler, with Marquis of Dufferin and Ava, Sir Edward Ward, Lt Col Henderson, and pilot Charles Shearing among the victims. Investigators noted the fatal breakup occurred in flight.
Four children were riding with Hal Belcher when the older car overturned on a grade near Welch. Betty Jane Belcher, 7, died at Grace hospital after a fractured skull. Annette Belcher, 10, and Nancy Woody, 6, were injured but expected to recover. Hal Belcher, 15, sustained minor injuries. The Belcher family is well known in Welch.

James Pyle aged 21 of Bluefield Virginia died at Bluefield sanitarium after injuries from a Monday ball game between Bluefield city league players and the Junior Mechanics of Bluefield West Virginia. He slipped at second base and was struck by a runner’s spikes, later suffering convulsions and skull fracture. The game in Wellerfield was halted with today’s league contest postponed.
Geneva Illinois July 21 A farmer’s wife killed her husband 55 Kane county farmer Charles Anderson and his 18 year old son Willis with an axe then set their home ablaze and killed herself with a slash to the throat. The tragedy was discovered by brother in law Charles Larsen who slept on the second floor and helped neighbors break in as smoke filled the house. The family had financial troubles noted by the sheriff who said no evidence tied Larsen to the crime.
Buffalo July 21 A motorist hid a quart of whiskey in twenty two ounce bottles aboard his car. Customs inspectors seized the contraband and assessed $5 per bottle, totaling $100 plus the original price. If the quart had remained intact the fine would have been only $5.
Taylor Hott, out of work, confessed to pushing his three children Gertrude Virginia seven Calvin W six and Boyd Preston five into a quarry hole in Martinsburg. Autopsies say all three died of suffocation and officials dispute his account of drowning them. The bodies were found clothed in cheap apparel with evidence of a violent death.
Victorian romance ends in secret London marriage between Bishop James Cannon Jr. of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and his secretary Helen Hawley McCallum. The couple sailed for Madeira and Brazil aboard the Arlanza after a brief ceremony performed by Rev. Arrum amid close friends. The bride, a Newark resident, and Sir Henry Lunn helped secure the special license. the news comes via Charlotte attorney Jake F. Newell who cites romance sparked during a Holy Land tour.
Senator Hatfield of West Virginia won Senate approval for a resolution requesting a tariff commission investigate production cost differences between U S blown glass tableware and foreign goods. The move seeks to examine price factors affecting domestic makers.
Dozen states endured a severe heat wave with many records broken and deaths possibly nearing twenty. New York area reported fourteen heat fatalities with 100 plus temperatures expanding through Maryland New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Rain offered brief relief in parts of the Midwest and New England while drought and forest fires heightened danger in several states.
The weather bureau forecast a break in the near nation wide heat wave tonight. The relief was expected to reach the Appalachian mountains by Tuesday and extend to the middle and north Atlantic coast by or during Tuesday night.

Washington July 21 The senate adjourned without acting on President Hoover's picks for the Federal Power Commission and the Philippines vice governorship. Three nominees Draper Williamson and Garland were to be examined further as Walsh and McKellar pressed for more information. Two confirmations were approved William Jardine to Egypt and Frank T. Hines to head veterans affairs consolidation.
President Hoover issued an executive order consolidating the veterans bureau the bureau of pensions and the national home for disabled volunteer soldiers into one national agency in Washington on July 21.

James Sydnor of Charles Town West Virginia was elected president of the Young People's conference of the Presbyterian synod of Virginia at the closing session of the annual meeting in Maesanetta Springs Virginia.
The ICC ordered a rate of 28 cents per long ton for coal and 25 cents per short ton for coke with a minimum of 8 dollars per car as the joint rate for the Maryland and Pennsylvania rail road. The decision favors Western Maryland Railway Company which filed the complaint alleging inequitable tariffs. The new rates apply to coal from Maryland central and western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to New York private sidings and take effect September 27.
Washington police charged Herbert M Campbell owner of the gun used to kill government clerk Mary Baker with assault and murder for the April 11 slaying. Alibi broken down he will be held after a warrant is sworn while Herman H Barree is kept for further questioning.
Washington July 20 six hours of questioning failed to crack the alibi of Herman H Barrere a former service man and itinerant painter arrested in the Mary Baker slaying Barrere was returned to Arlington county jail where five suspects remain in the case Lieut Edward J Kelly said further questioning would follow tonight Eight witnesses faced Barrere at one point seven failed to identify him Herbert M Campbell owner of the gun used in the slaying was taken to the room twice but unclear identification occurred.
Lee Gehlback from Little Rock Ark. led the first day of the All American air derby with a 23 minute margin toward the $15 000 top prize for fastest elapsed time in the 5500 mile swing. The race began in Detroit with a stop at Buffalo where Gehlback again led after the leg. Quinby dropped to 12th as Hamer moved to second and Bayles rose to third. A derby plane and another entry piloted by John Kruttechnitz of San Mateo Calif. nosed over in gusty wind at Buffalo but damage was minor and both continued after repairs.
The London naval pact was ratified by the Senate 56 to ? with a decisive majority. Senator Swanson led the debate for the pact while Senator Norris secured a key reservation against secret understandings. President Hoover invited confidential inspection of papers. the session adjourned sine die as the House and Senate plan a December reconvening.
