Friends in New York held a wake for Claude Joseph Bradley a dying cement salesman with cancer. Bradley played the piano for about an hour as doctors warned he has two to three months to live and he aimed to sell enough cement to provide for his daughter and settle debts.
Fritz Kuhn head of the German American Bund pleaded guilty to drunkenness and profanity in Webster district court. He received a five dollar fine on the profanity count and one dollar on the drunkenness charge, with further action suspended. Police officer Henry Plasse testified Kuhn’s party was stopped during a motor trip. The courtroom murmured as Kuhn paid the fines in one dollar bills.
John Kelly of Pigins West Virginia must return from Montana to face a West Virginia murder indictment dating to 1922. The case arose after Grover Gibson quarreled with Kelly, leading to Gibson being shot and later dying in a Charleston hospital. Authorities waited years to bring action.
The mining bill, backed by Senator Neely and Representative Keller, passed committee after tumbling provisions. It removes mandatory special inspections on miner request and drops a proposed new mine safety inspection unit while keeping general reporting of inspection results.

Charleston West Virginia July 20 Amid unofficial reports of a pending reorganization of the WPA administrative setup in West Virginia there was rumor that the head from hameton would move unless adequate office space is found quickly State Administrator Joseph N Alderson said that due to the inability to find office in Charleston consideration is being given toward removal of the state offices to another city in the state It was believed the reorganization would bring more employees to the state offices which would act as a new headquarters Several months ago Huntington extended a bid for the state WPA headquarters when more space was needed It was understood the administrator is working out a system to curtailment necessitated by the recent congressional act that called relief workers with 18 months of employment should be severed Overnight observers read into this the probability of revision of administrative organization with an eye toward consolidation of jobs to free funds for future relief employment
London July 20 famed British scientist J B Haldane offered a new explanation for the Thetis submarine disaster. He suggested the sudden shift from foul air to Davis escape apparatus oxygen may have overwhelmed the crew. He theorized that breathing oxygen from tanks for about 45 minutes after entering the escape chamber could have allowed safe escape.
Senate Republicans oppose key provisions of the president’s 2.8 billion lending bill as committees struggle to finish work by early next week. RFC funds may extend for a year, drawing critic ire while discussions include foreign purchases and export credit provisions.

Tazewell Va July 20 Division superintendent A B Greever releases an incomplete list of county teachers signed to term contracts for the coming session. The notice names high school and grade staff across Tazewell including Bluefield Street and local schools with principal Robert B Wilson and others.
Gerould R. Goldner a 29 year old Ohio preacher was kidnapped near Jerusalem by Arabs seeking 5000 dollars. His father Dr Jacob Goldner 67 a Cleveland pastor was also seized but later released to help arrange the payoff. United States Consul George Wadsworth aided efforts as authorities hunted the abductors near the Dead Sea and Monastery searchers pursued leads to an abandoned cave site.
Armour & Company rejected a peace parley with CIO representatives amid strike threats at 17 plants. Union chiefs planned to take the dispute to President Roosevelt, while Pac Workers Organizing Committee demanded contract negotiations. Spokesmen refused city unionist suggestions or submission to further mediation.
Vice President William Blizzard announced Kingston Pocahontas Coal signed a satisfactory contract with United Mine Workers for 2200 miners across four operations ending a long shutdown. McKell Coal and Coke reopened without a union contract as talks continue on the union shop and eviction suits.
In Storrington England a dramatic marital swap unfolds as Raymond Massey and William Dwight Whitney seal new marriages. Whitney weds Actress Adrianne Allen, while Massey’s ex wife Dorothy Ludington Whitney reenters marriage with Whitney. Allen, a British actress, and Whitney depart for London then presumably to the capital. The involved parties include prominent New York lawyer George Whitney and New York society figure Dorothy Ludington Whitney, with Allen’s two children Daniel and Anna mentioned.
