Mariner 4 flew past Mars and began recording up to 21 photos. A split of signals suggested the camera tape recorder might not have operated properly though initial reports praised on and off signals.
Secretary McNamara warned of growing Viet Cong strength in South Vietnam as plans show reserve and National Guard callups potentially totaling over 200000. He noted possible increases in force levels could justify extending tours and raising draft calls while Capitol Hill discussions push for 1 to 2 billion more in the 1966 military appropriation.
AP reports Adlai E. Stevenson, longtime U N spokesman, collapsed on a London sidewalk and died at St George's Hospital. Officials cite possible stroke or heart attack. World leaders expressed sorrow as U S flags flew at half staff. Stevenson had just met in London after UN work in Geneva.
A 27 year old motorman for Standard Smokeless Coal Co died in a mine accident at Raven Virginia at noon Wednesday. Joe Harless Van Dyke of Raven Route 1 was rolled by a motor. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Joe H Van Dyke of Contrary Creek Virginia his wife and three children. The body lies at Grundy Funeral Home with funeral arrangements not yet set.
In Cincinnati Ohio AP reports Dr Sam Sheppard lost his bid for a new trial in the Marilyn Sheppard murder case. The May 5 order to return him to prison stands while the appeal proceeds. He contends a bushy haired intruder killed his wife on July 4 1954. A stay for Supreme Court review is likely.
Concord College President Joseph F. Marsh defended a selective admissions plan at a Charleston meeting, arguing state college presidents favor change and noting Concord’s land limits cap enrollment at about 2,300. He urged a statewide approach to higher education and said better-than-average students from low income families deserve affordable public options.
Extended forecast for West Virginia calls for cooler than average weather through Sunday. Temperatures will average 2 to 4 degrees below normal highs of 82 in the north and 86 in the south with lows around 58 in the north and 64 in the south. Rain totals about one inch across the period.
An Appalachia Regional Commission decision places a major portion of U S Route 460 in West Virginia and Virginia under the Appalachian Road Development Program. The Springville to Narrows segment in Mercer and Giles counties is funded for preliminary engineering with 70 percent federal aid, 30 percent state match, and plans to examine four or three lane needs through 1975.
David Hurt Kahle a 17 year old Bluefield Virginia boy died Wednesday after his motorbike collided with a 1962 station wagon driven by Carl Ball in Bluefield. Police say Kahle lost control and struck the left headlight area of Ball s car. Kahle was dead on arrival at Bluefield Sanitarium at 2 40 p m from severe head injuries. He was taken from Dudley Memorial Mortuary to hospital by ambulance. Survivors include his parents two sisters and two grandmothers. Funeral services will be held Friday at Graham Presbyterian Church.
