A group of about a dozen armed men led by Dan Nolan and Floyd Coy intercepted Clyde Smith Jr. bearing an invitation from Wyoming to President Coolidge near Torrington. They overtook him and fled toward the Bad Lands but were captured by a posse of around forty cowboys led by Sheriff Harold Dewitt. The message, rushed to Torrington ahead of schedule, was recovered from the burned calfskin invitation. Boone Ledson then took it toward the Black Hills.
