Pocahontas Virginia hosted a lively Fourth featuring a trades procession, 100 and 200 yard races, and a baseball game where Bluefield stars impressed. Bluefield sent winners Frank Maynard and Percy Baldwin while Pocahontas guests enjoyed a generous program and hospitality.
News briefs cover Harlow cigar factory closure, Bland Street Woman’s Home Missionary Society meeting set for July 7, a colored band’s patriotic performance, a false death report about Yost, a fatal North Fork affray between John Smith and William Jenks, visits by Chicken to Roanoke, a railway accident near Elkhorn, a deputy collector recommissioning, district redistricting, Bluefield and Elkhorn baseball results, a child’s funeral, Beaver Pond school board hiring of Prof. Fulwiler and staff, and list of teachers and staff appointments.
Letter from S. B. Avis of Bluefield West Virginia defends Ginn & Co in a dispute with a Kentucky representative of a foreign trust over school books. Avis calls for merit based consideration by the school book board and rebukes anonymous letters and bulldozing tactics.
A key ring with three keys was found and should be left at the office. The finder is asked to return it to the location for claim.
J. W. Pence spent the Fourth in Roanoke. Hon. John Cooper and family have returned from Europe. Mrs. John M. Anderson is quite ill at her Coopertown home. C. M. Goode and 8. M. Bernard spend a few days at Mountain Lake. Miss Ida White, daughter of Sheriff White of Princeton, is visiting in the city. Mrs. Minnie Slusher slowly recovers from a severe illness at her aunt Mrs. John Pack’s home in the west end. W. J. Updike, superintendent of the electric light company, returned from a Philadelphia business trip connected with the company.

Washington July 5 the civil service commission is expected to issue an order this week exempting deputy collectors of internal revenue from civil service rules. The commission has believed these deputies do not belong in the classified service, but faced uncertainty about distinguishing main office staff from outside deputies. Henry Clews reports a brighter business outlook with factory restarts, stronger mercantile tone, and improved crop forecasts aiding confidence for the fall trade.
Andrew Pawusky a Pole living at Pocahontas faced a four foot rattler on a mountain path near Coaldale. The snake struck his trouser leg but did not bite flesh. He screamed and rolled down the slope twice, then with a wooden stick killed the serpent. Pawusky felt ill for some time after the incident.
A message from President McKinley opened the Oakland annual exposition in San Francisco. An orator read the telegraphed greeting to a vast audience and the reply was flashed back over the transcontinental wire as the band played Hail to the Chief.
Crack whist players from across the country gather in Put-In-Bay for the seventh national American Whist Congress which begins tomorrow and runs through the week. The main event is the contest for the first possession of the American Whist League challenge trophy for 1806-97.
A special train carried attendees to Powhatan for an enjoyable church picnic yesterday. The event ran late with a large crowd, and the day was described as pleasant and well spent.
Criminal court met yesterday at Princeton with several indicted prisoners confessing and being sentenced. The trial of Fannie Martiness began for forging J C Carpenter’s name on a check. Ballard was arrested for the same crime when Martiness cried to a magistrate and claimed she forged the check.
William Bryan was the guest of honor at a brilliant banquet in Los Angeles where representatives from across California greeted him. He will be escorted to San Francisco for a large demonstration on Wednesday night in his honor.
The Institute for Mercer County will be held at Princeton commencing July 1 1807. All county teachers are urged to attend with no excuses for absence considered. W B Honaken County Supt June 19.

A coroner ruled death by heart disease but neighbors doubted after a body exhumation showed a broken neck. E. S. Shue was indicted and sentenced to life in prison. The key testimony came from his mother in law claiming her daughter’s spirit named Shue as the killer. Most evidence remained circumstantial.
