The Associated Press reports the July Fourth holiday toll on U S roads surpassed the pre holiday NSC estimate of 370 and neared a record 407 traffic deaths set in 1955. Officials warned only a miracle could prevent breaking that peak as the three day period extended.
Accidental deaths reported by midnight total 639 with incomplete counts. Traffic deaths numbered 395, boating 35, drowning 108, and 102 in miscellaneous categories.
An Associated Press survey details a heavy three day holiday toll from 6 p m Friday to midnight Monday with 579 deaths overall including 367 traffic, 77 drownings, 87 other causes and 48 boating fatalities. The three day period ended with 73 million Americans traveling.
West Virginia faces several days of cool weather this week with average temperatures four degrees below normal. The Weather Bureau predicts cool days on Tuesday Thursday and Friday, followed by a return to warmer temperatures by Saturday. Scattered showers midweek and again Saturday total about half to three-fourths inch.
Giles County Virginia plasterer George Morehead about 55 died near 2 p.m. Monday in a Crow Bey Sausage Co. plant elevator shaft. He was on a makeshift scaffold when a coworker pressed a control, the cage rose, a heavy weight fell, and Morehead may have been crushed between the ceiling and scaffold. Sheriff Clyde White and State Trooper Mozingo investigated. His body moved from Johnston Funeral Home Oakvale to Riffe Funeral Home Narrows awaiting arrangements.
AP tally notes five accidental West Virginia deaths three drownings and two highway fatalities, with no Independence Day fatalities reported. Meanwhile an Air Force probe investigates a raft sighting near Norway as a missing U S plane remains unfound since Friday. Khrushchev cites West Germans seeking to reclaim Austria, and a China tanker collision near Tunisia threatens Cuba. Police seek a Western Union robber in Huntington after a $500 to $1,000 demand and threats. A Giles County plasterer dies in a Kellysville elevator shaft accident. George Morehead, 55, of Narrows, is named as the victim. Bluefield loses 8 1 at Bowen Field to Wytheville, and three Bluefield men are held in two break in cases.
Ottawa reports Prime Minister John Diefenbaker states Canada will not receive U S nuclear weapons for its Bomarc squadrons. Washington insists warheads stay under U S control. Diefenbaker says Canada would use weapons under its own decision, preferring conventional warheads if necessary.
A clash between Chinese settlers and Indonesian security forces at Tjimahi on Sunday deepens tensions between Indonesia and Red China. The confrontation follows earlier strains in diplomatic and security relations.
West Virginia counted five traffic related deaths over the Fourth of July weekend from Friday to Monday. Two drownings occurred in Monongalia County and three highway fatalities in Southern West Virginia. Names include Edward Jarrell Jr. and Kenneth Bailey among others.

The Federal Trade Commission announced a nationwide crackdown on alleged false advertising of contact lenses. It challenges claims that all persons can wear lenses, that they cause no discomfort, and that they fully substitute for eyeglasses. The FTC says many cannot wear them successfully and most will feel discomfort at first.
Massachusetts senator Kennedy rejects Truman's charges of a rigged convention. He says he is ready for the presidency and drove across the country to answer the prearranged convention critique. Kennedy notes he visited every state and resigned as a Los Angeles delegate to avoid party influence.
Virginia suffers 21 accidental deaths during a 78 hour holiday weekend with 11 highway fatalities and four drownings. A house fire in Northumberland County killed James Norris Bunns 10 and Harvey Bunns Conners 6, while James Mullins of Henry died from injuries after a two car crash near Christiansburg. Paul Johnson of Bedford and Herbert Smut Jr. of Waynesville also died in separate incidents. The toll includes five miscellaneous fatalities and one boating fire-related death.
State and county police patrolled highways through the July 4 weekend with officers in Wytheville Welch and Princeton and Bland Texewell Giles in Virginia and Wyoming McDowell and Mercer in West Virginia reporting no accidents during the three day holiday. Patrols remained at midnight to curb waterway traffic and protect arrivals to work, with officials noting the area escaped the national toll.
