President Ford told Congress another major tax cut could be feasible by 1979 if federal spending remains restrained. He noted the $28 billion in permanent tax cuts proposed for this year and next and did not specify potential size.
A U S District Judge ruled the National Right to Work Legal Defense and Education Fund operates as a front for employers with concrete interests in lawsuits against unions. The ruling cites financial contributors among those employers.
In Charleston West Virginia the Senate redistricting bill was moved out of committee as a court challenge looms. The House Judiciary Committee sent back a campaign finance and disclosure bill to subcommittee for clarity.
West Virginia Governor Arch Moore defends the extortion indictment as political revenge despite DOJ approval. He accuses U S Attorney John Field of engineering the case and denies taking a $25 000 cash gift from Diversified Mountaineer Corp. He notes bills on energy subsidy coal tax malpractice insurance and underwrites reform and says he turned in two 10 000 illegal contributions from Ashland Oil to his committees.
The Virginia General Assembly reopened Monday with a slate of anti crime bills dominating the session. Details continue on page 6 of the Daily Telegraph.
A bill allowing abortions in the first 13 weeks with physician involvement was introduced, and sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee for study. Also proposed are a state police reorganization, branch banking, and consolidation of five agencies into Health and Social Services.
Emma Richmond received the Humane Society Humanitarian of the Year award at Mercer County Health Center during the society's annual meeting. The charter member led a county humane society drive and now oversees foster care and adoptions at the Mercer County Animal Shelter in Green Valley.
A 27 year old Mercer County man Gary L Young faces first degree murder charges after the early Wednesday shooting death of his ex wife Pamela Young in a Bluefield parking lot. He was bound over to the upcoming grand jury in Bluefield while jailed on no bond after a Monday preliminary hearing.
