An early morning mission saw a U S Air Force F 4G Wild Weasel and an F 16 Fighting Falcon escorting a French Mirage on reconnaissance when Iraqi radar tracked them at 509 a m EST The F 4G launched a HARM missile at the radar and the F 16 deployed cluster bombs on the radar site.
Iraqi officials accused the United States of fabricating the missile attack near the no fly zone in northern Iraq. U S defense officials said two missiles were fired from F-4G aircraft at a radar site near Mosul, but the first missile missed and no damage report was available for the second.
Representative Rick Boucher of Virginia urges Radford Army Ammunition Plant to seek private sector contracts after 730 workers were laid off amid a broad military downsizing. He notes the plant is not closed but will face changes and must diversify beyond DoD contracts to sustain employment.
President Clinton scrambles to find a new attorney general after Zoe Baird withdrew amid a political storm over hiring illegal aliens and tax issues. He admits rushing the selection, says the new search won’t be limited to women, and notes Baird’s failure to file Social Security taxes for a Peruvian nanny.
