In Hoboken New Jersey a five story waterfront apartment blaze of suspected arson origin killed at least 15 people and injured 19. Rescue teams searched rubble for six missing as roof and top stories collapsed. Fire authorities noted arson indicators and a rapid spread amid freezing temperatures.
A cold Arctic air mass brings rain changing to snow across the mountains and eastern areas with windy conditions. Temperatures drop from the 30s to the teens and 20s, with highs in the 20s to low 30s elsewhere and gusty winds. Roanoke police located a compact white Vega believed to be Nancy Barnes's car, found abandoned about two blocks from where 16 month old Lucy Barnes was left. Mrs Barnes's mother, Lucy Frye, reports the purse remained in the seat when officers found the vehicle Friday around 9 p.m., linking the incident to the Roanoke case ongoing on Page Two Column One.
Regent Andrew Clark, of the West Virginia Board of Regents, says reports of reducing Bluefield State College’s role are untrue. He notes the board aims to preserve Bluefield as a strong two year technical school with some four year offerings, while avoiding program duplication with Concord College.
