G C Johnson Co Welch won 165000 for five classrooms a gymnasium auditorium and heat plant renovation at Burch High School Delbarton. Hendricks Construction Co Matewan won 129842 to build a new gym at Liberty High Williamson. Financed from a 2361000 bond issue approved by voters two years ago.

Capels man found dead in car in Welch area
A 59-year-old Capels man, Tom Benson, a machine operator for New River and Poca Consolidated Coal Co., was found dead in his parked car on Welch Davy Road. Authorities ruled death by own action with a shotgun used, no note found, and no motive evident. Survivors include his wife and four grown children. The body was moved to Douglas Mortuary after a stay at Fanning Funeral Home.
