John Ellis Cook, 33, a Page County coal mine car dropper, was killed at the Page Pocahontas Coal operation when a retarder failed and runaway cars struck him as he guided two empties. The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. near Garden Creek Virginia, marking the first fatal incident of this type at the mine and the third fatality in Virginia in less than a week. Cook survived by his wife Louella Patton and two children, with funeral arrangements planned in Richlands.

Mine Officials Investigate Fatal Pond Creek Mine Accident
Bradshaw West Virginia January 16 mine officials continued their inquiry into the Pond Creek Pocahontas No 6 mine accident that killed one man and sent four to hospitals. Brakeman Alex Duff 31 of Bradshaw was killed when 35 runaway empty cars crashed into his mantrip. Injured were Norris Lester Burke Cantrell Ira Blankenship and Walter Poore all of Bradshaw. Cantrell skull fracture listed as fair condition. Carriers Lester Blankenship in good condition Poore shoulder injury. Pond Creek a subsidiary of Island Creek bought the Bradshaw mine two months ago from Southern Coal. Duff born February 22 1919 in Petty County Kentucky survived by wife three sons parents four brothers and eight sisters. Funeral arrangements set for Garrett Kentucky with burial in Miners Cemetery. Funeral home Fanning Welch in charge.

Ballard Campbell, a Kimball Negro, pleaded guilty in McDowell county court to assault and battery. He was to stand trial on a felonious assault indictment against Rudolph Gordor of Keystone. Judge Richard R. Parsons fined Campbell twenty five dollars plus costs. Tomorrow’s docket includes Grover Bishop, charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, Ballard Blevins, theft of copper wire, Garland Howard, Harvey Howard, Junior and Walter Lee Howard, all of Elkhorn, for robbery.

Two men linked to The Hub on Bland Street near Jones were fined and sentenced in city police court for tip ticket charges. Each pleaded not guilty and appealed their $100 fines and costs and one-year terms, with $200 appeal bonds set. They were arrested in a January 4 raid. William Taylor faced tip ticket charges while Dewey Rowden, a guard, was accused of hindering lawful arrest of the keeper of gambling devices known as tip tickets.
