Rockefeller appoints Speed Jones WV highway commissioner

Gov elect Jay Rockefeller named Joseph Speed Jones a veteran engineer to head the West Virginia Department of Highways as part of nine new appointments. Jones, 52, will receive 35000 dollars annually and replaces William S. Ritchie Jr. Other picks include Patrick Boggs as alcohol beverage control commissioner and Angus Peyton as commerce commissioner.

New Ambulance Presented To Bluefield Rescue Squad

Gov Arch Moore presented Bluefield Rescue Squad with a new 13518 dollar ambulance in Charleston. Mercer County funded half the cost with the Governor's Highway Safety Commission covering the other half. The state awarded 14 ambulances and Mercer County has now received four since the program began.

Boyd Murder Case Appeal Rescheduled

Jim Boyd, a Mercer Countian convicted of first degree murder, will have his appeal reheard by the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Princeton attorney John Frazier said the court will reconsider arguments. final arguments were in September and a decision was not reached by December. Boyd, prisoner at Moundsville, was convicted in Mercer County in July 1973 for the December 1972 shooting death of James Baldwin.

Former British Prime Minister Anthony Eden died at his country home in southern England at age 79. He was remembered for opposing fascism and resigning in 1938 over appeasement, and for the controversial 1956 Suez invasion.

Hurley Residents Upset With Power Interruptions

Hurley Virginia residents complain to Appalachian Power Company offices in Bluefield and Grundy and the Federal Utility Board in Richmond about frequent outages. Maggie Fletcher of the Knox District Community Action Association cites cold wiring and an underpowered substation as causes, noting families endure outages weekly or more. Jim Harman of the company says the Hurley substation was rebuilt and in use since December and crews have battled outages from a 34 000 volt line outage and a burnt line amid earth slides and trees.

Bloodmobile meets quota in Bluefield with 183 units collected

American Red Cross Bloodmobile exceeded its monthly quota in Bluefield with 183 units collected, topping the 167 unit target. Some 195 people attended at the Bluefield Youth Center as donors and helpers assisted, despite bad weather. Community groups coordinated transport and unloading.
