A Rome dispatch reports a major quake hitting Avezzano and 20 000 dead in the Marsi with 15 000 perished there and 1 000 in Sora. Destruction spans fifteen other towns. King Victor Emmanuel directs rescue as relief trains and doctors flood in from Rome and Naples.
Rome reports devastating losses with about twenty towns leveled and many more damaged. King Victor Emmanuel oversees relief as Sora Wit, a 20 000 strong city, is almost destroyed and survivors remain panicked.
London dispatch cites Rome Tribuna estimating 23 000 to 25 000 victims from the earthquake, reflecting a devastating toll and the scale of destruction.
Columbia January 14 Cole I Blease retires as South Carolina governor five days before the end of his second term. He resigns by message to the general assembly and sec retary of state McCown Lieutenant Governor Charles A Smith sworn in to serve out the term. Impeachment talk noted but no action taken.
The House met at noon and adopted the conference report on the immigration bill. It continued work on the District of Columbia appropriation and reported Shields' bill to incorporate the national organization of boy scouts. A recess was taken to 8 p.m. for miscellaneous business and adjournment occurred at 2:20 p.m. due to a quorum shortage until Friday noon. Gardner introduces a coast defense information resolution, River and Harbor debate proceeds, with adjournment set to 11 a.m. Friday.

Harry Hamilton forger and KE Hanley highwayman with Siler Adkins and Allen Burton murderers escaped from Virginia penitentiary Monday night and were captured at Coleman's Mill Caroline County by farmer J A Sanford who fed them then held guard until the warden arrived. Adkins Turton were later captured near Sabrot Island station and returned to the penitentiary. Each convict to receive five years added for misbehavior and Sanford was paid $100.
News from Hatfield West Virginia reports the court of appeals reversed the Pike county court in restraining a liquor license for R W Buskirk. Mothers wept upon hearing the decision as farmers and miners rushed into town to learn if whiskey would be sold, recalling past tensions and bootlegging allegations tied to Buskirk’s operations. Buskirk says he will obtain license once granted.

The Bluefield Chamber of Commerce elected Fred W. Udy as president at its first meeting after adopting new by laws. A ten member citizen committee will draft a city charter amendment for a city manager plan and seek public ratification before legislative action.
