Jackson Ky January 12. John Smith, indicted with Judge Hargis and whose confession was published yesterday, has left Jackson and his whereabouts are unknown. Hargis is his bondsman for over thirty thousand dollars. The situation is quiet tonight.

Cincinnati reports Bud Cooper was shot by William Hickey at Seventh and Vine streets late last night after Cooper insulted Hickey's wife who accompanied him. Hickey has been arrested.
Washington January 12. The president sent to the Senate the nomination of Arthur F. Statter to be assistant secretary of the treasury.
Reports from Bluefield recount a colored man overheard claiming to have seen the George murder. Police released him after questioning. crowds monitor trains and police for any further clues as Bluefield and nearby towns search for answers in the Tazewell case. Chief Newkirk suspects death by own action, a theory with many supporters.
William J. Oliver of Knoxville and Anthony M. Bangs of New York bid the lowest for the Panama canal construction and will share the work. The contract calls for 6.75 percent of the total estimated cost and workload to begin within sixty days after signing.
Mrs Irene Steele of Chicago widow of J Rollo Steele who killed himself by a bomb explosion in the Fourth Street National Bank identifies the scattered clothing believed to be hers and refutes reports of a second wife in Lynchburg Virginia.
