Col Arman S Ernest, son of Mr and Mrs P P Ernest of Tazewell Virginia, received an honorable discharge from the Army Air Corps on December 26, 1946. He served over three years in Australia and New Guinea, fought at Port Moresby and Lae, and was part of the Fifth Air Force landing at Morotai in September 1944. He earned the presidential citation for bravery and also served in the infantry. His brother Daniel P Ernest Jr served over three years in the South Pacific and was discharged in October 1945.

Welch News Suspect Admits Welch Slaying
Ray Emmett Gentry, 38, living with relatives in Coalwood, was arrested in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and waived extradition to face questioning in the Christmas Eve killing of Rufus Banks, 50, in Welch. Banks body was found Dec 31 in an abandoned house near Kimball. FBI in Philadelphia confirmed Gentry signed a statement admitting the slaying and will be returned to McDowell County. The case earlier involved multiple witnesses, including DePriest family members, and a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Thomas Shrader junior of Horsepen, a World War II veteran, was found dead on Horsepen Mountain by a search party after leaving home at 5 PM. Constable Altizer said the death was self inflicted by gunshot. He was 21 or 22, born December 24, 1924, survived by wife Dollie Vance Shrader, parents, a brother Wade Shrader of Seattle, and two sisters. Funeral at Horsepen church Monday at 1:30 PM, interment New Tazewell Cemetery. Body to be brought to home from O J Douglas Mortuary Welch.

Eva Tanguay, famed vaudeville star known as the I Don t Care Girl, died today in Los Angeles at 68 from a cerebral hemorrhage.
