Manhunt Shrinks Woods After Triple Killing in Mississippi

In Lexington Mississippi a posse and citizens surrounded woods near Coxbury to capture Ed Noel 28 after he killed three men and wounded two others in a 48 hour spree. Four hundred officers and residents pressed the manhunt as Noel hid in a wooded area behind his home.

Plane Crashes Burn Near Gaffney South Carolina

A twin engine B 25 Air Force plane carrying three crew members crashed and burned in a pasture near Gaffney South Carolina at about 5 p m. Two bodies were confirmed inside the aircraft and a worker from Donaldson Air Force Base was summoned to help with removal, though operations were planned to start in the morning.

World Population Keeps Rising At Record Pace

The Population Reference Bureau reports world population expanding rapidly, risking food shortages. Even with higher food output, over half of 2.465 billion people remain underfed and inadequately housed. If fertility stays high, world population could reach seven billion by 2010 and 15 billion a century later. An estimated 252 million were added in 1953 at about 70,000 daily.

Sleet Blankets Bluefield Area In Wintry Blast

A sleet storm coated Bluefield and surrounding areas with ice and snow. Drivers faced treacherous conditions though no accidents were reported. Forecast called for 6 to 10 inches of snow in southern regions, with temperatures in the mid 20s. Roads across West Virginia deteriorated as the storm spread from Elkins to Greenbrier and Fayette counties.

Ex-West Virginian New Safety Director Named

J. B. Benson, former West Virginia coal executive, is appointed safety director of the Southern Coal Producers' Assn. to coordinate safety work across Southern West Virginia, Western Virginia, Eastern Tennessee and Kentucky with federal and state mine safety bodies and the United Mine Workers. Benson, a Carnegie Tech graduate, has led the U S Bureau of Mines Norton branch since 1950. He previously worked as engineer and chief engineer for Pursgrove Mining Co. in Northern West Virginia.

Miss Universe Marries Young American in Stockton Ceremony

Miss Universe Christiane Martel age 17 of Paris wed Ronnie Maren Go 21 of Stockton in a 15 minute ceremony at Church of the Assumption. Seven hundred guests attended as they planned a two week honeymoon in Palm Springs before settling in Stockton in a new three bedroom ranch.

Twelve Die As Private Plane Crashes Near Shreveport

A plane carrying wealthy businessmen from a duck hunting trip crashed near Wallace Lake, burning beyond recognition. Twelve people were killed, including United Gas Co. President N. C. McGowan and Shreveport banker Walter Jacobs. Braniff Airlines President Thomas Braniff was among those missing. Fire Fatalities Reported In Newburg Home Blaze

A mother Victoria Strahin, 27, and her daughter Linda Sue, 2, died from burns after a fire destroyed a house between Newburg and Arthradale in Preston County. Mrs Strahin died several hours after the blaze while Linda Sue died early today.

British Comet jet crash near Elba with 35 aboard

A British Comet jet liner carrying 35 people sank in the Tyrrhenian Sea between Elba and Montecristo. Fishermen reported no survivors as an air-sea search began and 15 bodies were later recovered. Flight from Rome to London disappeared about 40 minutes after takeoff.

In Burbank California a two year old boy named Jimmy Resch was found with an empty bottle of nitro glycerine pills taken from his mother Marjorie Resch at a drive in theater. An ambulance rushed him to a hospital for stomach pumping. He told his mother I am still hungry after treatment.
