President Eisenhower urged a receptive Democratic Congress to unite on military and economic strength for a growing America and a just peace. He outlined a balanced budget, restraint on inflation, and a 77 billion dollar spending plan with focus on defense, civil rights, and economic stability.
Snow and ice blanketed Bluefield and parts of West Virginia and Southwest Virginia with four inches at midnight. State police warned to travel only if necessary as roads remained slick in Mercer Wyom ing McDowell Tazewell Bland Giles Wise Lee counties and along the West Virginia Turnpike while motorists faced icy spots and hazardous conditions.
Air Force sergeant Lawrence Baker met a Japanese woman Midori in Japan and married her. After Midori died of cancer in Mitchel AFB Hospital, Baker disappeared at the funeral and then took his own life in the family car with a note to his parents expressing love for Mickey and hope of reunion. He will be buried beside his bride.
Roanoke West Virginia? The Norfolk and Western will recall over 500 members of the Roanoke Better Service Club at Hotel Roanoke Friday. Saunders said 1,460 men would be recalled this month, including 620 announced last Sunday, with 840 additional hires planned. 1,466 total N W employees system wide, many in Roanoke.
In Washington James R Hoffa canceled a planned March convention to remove court appointed monitors from the Teamsters citing insufficient time to elect delegates. He warns the court battles over monitor powers persist and Hoffa seeks a special convention to regain control and end the monitorship.
President Eisenhower warns Congress that defense expenses are rising as he cites the B58 bomber, a Navy A31, and the Atlas missile. He notes weights, prices around tens of millions per unit, and total missile program spending near seven billion dollars this year with higher projections for next year.
Tokyo reports the Japanese Cabinet has tentatively approved inviting Adm. Mitsugu Anbara to tour U.S. naval installations. Anbara serves as chief of staff of Japan's budding navy.
The Senate rejected a key antifilibuster bid and moved toward a possible final vote next week on stricter debate limits. Lyndon Johnson leads a compromise effort while antifilibuster allies vow a last-litch fight to strengthen their position.
John Fraim WSAI news director Jim Brown photographer and Jim Jordan writer spent about 16 hours underground in Eureka Cave Whitley City McCreary County Kentucky . Brown injured his ankle when they became lost but the trio was rescued just after midnight and returned to Cincinnati.
In Zamora Spain the Vega de Tera dam burst during heavy rains and released 230 million cubic feet of water into Rivadelago. The 500 resident village was devastated with more than 150 bodies counted by nightfall as rescue teams reached the site.
Boyd A. Bennett former city manager of Bluefield died suddenly at his Florida home on November 6 1958 shortly after returning from a world cruise. He led Bluefield from September 29 1925 to June 30 1929. Funeral services were held in Florida.
The Commerce Department reports December 1958 retail sales reached a record total of 200.3 billion dollars with December sales estimated at 21.1 billion. The surge in Christmas buying pushed overall 1958 retail activity to new highs.
Three Bluefield college students Kenneth W Gray Ron ald N Bone Don F Knox pleaded guilty in Charleston Federal Court to conspiracy to steal interstate shipments from Consolidated Motor Freight in Bluefield. Knox admitted assault of FBI agent Francis Burke with a car to maim him. Sentencing set for April 2 in Beckley.
Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan arrived in Chicago for a two week U S tour to win goodwill for the Soviet Union and push peaceful coexistence. He met business leaders, faced egg throwing demonstrations, and said no major Soviet policy changes are planned while predicting future signs of improved Soviet American relations.
The Weather Bureau reports a cold weekend in West Virginia with temperatures 4 to 8 degrees below normal through Wednesday. Snow flurries are expected Saturday and Tuesday with total precipitation of one tenth to two tenths inches.
Rescue crews reached a charred site on Holston Mountain near Kingsport Tennessee finding all ten aboard dead. The DC3 vanished Thursday night en route from Memphis via Nashville and Knoxville to Tri Cities Airport in fog. Victims include W L Dennis L R Hashie Frank Halstead J A Bradley Robert Matthews James A Porter and crew Captain Robert L Golmier first officer Robert Irwin stewardess Wanda Nalley.
WALINGTON AP American and its pilots reached a wage dispute settlement after a 21 day strike. Negotiators, led by Lev Edwards of the National Mediation Board, hoped flights would resume Sunday with recalls starting Saturday night and operations possibly in full by early next week. About 1,500 pilots and copilots were furloughed without pay while American serves 77 cities and carries about 22,000 passengers daily.
President and Mrs. Eisenhower arrived at their Catoctin Mountain lodge in Maryland for a weekend of rest. The secluded camp sits about 25 miles from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where the president's farm is located.
