He was moved to Bluefield Sanitarium in serious condition but is expected to recover. Carter had recently been adjudged insane by Tazewell county authorities and was being detained in transit to Marion.

Colored hotel on Clark side of Northfork burned
The West End colored hotel on the Clark side of Northfork owned by the Clark Development Company was destroyed by fire early last night. The blaze started about 7 45 and the entire structure burned to the ground. Insurance coverage was reported and some believe the fire was incendiary. Operator William Tucker said the fire began in one room with material piled in the center. No belongings were saved, but volunteers saved nearby buildings.
