President Ford vetoed a measure to extend picketing rights for construction unions, warning it could cause greater conflict in the industry. He praised some bargaining provisions but opposed the common situs picketing concept and its potential to shut down sites. Secretary Dunlop hinted at resigning after the veto.
The U S Treasury distributed an initial installment of 1.88 million to 11 presidential hopefuls with checks handed in Washington and others mailed. Noted recipients include Lloyd Bentsen and Ronald Reagan, while Carter Shriver Wallace Bayh Harris Jackson Udall also received 100000 each. Additional 4.3 million in claims await FEC review.
West Virginia treasurer Ronald G. Pearson announced a plan to invest about 120 million dollars in one year certificates of deposit from state banks. The first quarter offering seeks about 30.6 million dollars from 214 approved banks, with 26 million pledged by 180 institutions. If fully subscribed, the scheme would yield 1.8 million dollars in interest, supporting loans to residents and businesses.

The plant offered $1.20 per hour raise over three years, life insurance up to $10,000, disability insurance, and a $3 per man monthly retirement boost, arguing such plans would render them noncompetitive.
A 68 year old Buchanan County man shot his wife three times at their home in Deskins Fork near Vansant Va. The wife, Rachel Meadows 71, died. The husband Loren Meadows shot himself and survived in serious condition. A son in law wrestled away the gun. Authorities call likely temporary insanity and continue investigation with no charges yet filed. Funeral arrangements pending.
Janet Keaton, 20, gave birth to a six pound two ounce boy at Charleston Memorial Hospital two hours after her car plunged into the Elk River on U S 119 near Elk View. Driver George Keaton, 23, and a family friend were rushed to help as bystanders pulled the couple from icy water.
