President Johnson orders J. Edgar Hoover to deploy 30 FBI agents to Florida to curb the violent Florida East Coast Railway strike. Dynamiters have blown trains and law officials report rising violence as Gov. Bryant and Labor officials seek a settlement amid federal pressure.
The IRS says employers must apply the new lower withholding rate to any paycheck due on or after March 5 regardless of pay period length. Some employers with two week or longer cycles were unsure whether to use old rates for part of the period. The new rates should be used for the entire paycheck even if the period began before the tax cut became law.
A bill allowing Buchanan County to levy up to one cent per ton on mined coal passed the Senate 27 to 5 and moves to the House. Originally 3 cents nationwide, the measure was narrowed after coal operators objected. five senators opposed, including M. M. Long who warned of broader tax expansion.
Secretary Udall said Italsider of Genoa will buy 10 million tons of West Virginia coking coal from Eastern Associated Coal between 1965 and 1975. The deal, aided by a Nathan Associates export report, could lead to similar agreements if inland freight rates change. Eastern's president Ross hailed it as providing stable jobs for West Virginia workers.
A 10th juror, J Wayman Rose, a 40 year old furniture salesman and ex Navy pilot, was added to the panel hearing Jack Ruby's case for the slaying of Lee Harvey Oswald. Two more jurors remain to be chosen under Texas law with no alternates.
The White House announced President Johnson will hold a 11 a.m. EST news conference Saturday in the State Department international conference room. The event will be broadcast live on radio and television with Johnson seated at a horseshoe table and about forty reporters in attendance.

Pat Berry a 16 year old Radford youth described as a hoodlum by Juvenile Court Judge John B Spiers Jr received an indefinite prison sentence after a high speed chase. He pled guilty to probation violation reckless driving vehicle without a permit failing to have license tags fail to stop for a police car and no vehicle inspection sticker. The judge ordered a minimum eight months at Beaumont Industrial School near Richmond. Berry was slightly injured when his car collided with a parked auto and was treated at a hospital.
President Makarios launches a 5000 strong police enlistment as Turkish Cypriots object to the plan while the first Soviet airliner lands in Nicosia. A civil aviation pact with the Soviet Union is set to be signed, and thousands of Greek Cypriots line up to join the force. Turkish Cypriots denounce the move as eroding minority rights.
A bill allowing counties to impose a one dollar monthly utility tax on private phone, electric, and gas bills passed the Virginia House 46 to 43 as administration leaders push for highway revenue measures. A companion gross receipts tax on telecoms also advanced, 43 to 41. The measures now go to the Senate amid concerns over funding for highway modernization.
