A Logan County circuit judge and a former sheriff were indicted on corruption charges linked to a payoff involving a sheriff's employee. The case stems from alleged illicit payments and centers on official misconduct within county law enforcement.

Three men indicted in January 1991 by a federal grand jury in Bluefield for drug conspiracy were arrested this week in Florida. Patrick Simms, Juan Carlos Fabralo, and Juan Sanchez were apprehended by U.S. marshals in the Miami area. Fabralo and Sanchez were charged in six and three counts respectively, with Simms named in an eight count indictment for a continuous criminal enterprise involving large quantities of marijuana and cocaine. Initial appearances were held in Miami and further detention hearings and trial are planned in Miami and then the Bluefield area.
West Virginia Health Care Cost Review Authority and Humana St Luke’s agree to restore 3.6 million dollars in overcharges from 1988 to 1991. The plan reduces St Luke’s average non government discharge charge from 8162.13 to 6040.24 and continues quarterly monitoring through August 1994. Humana notes rate adjustments began in 1990 with an immediate rate freeze and no expected service or job impacts from the change.
Princeton police have dropped the two hour limit for side streets downtown to aid workers and shoppers. Police Chief C A Kassay says the change encourages use of side streets and residential areas while noting initial $5 parking fines were issued but have since declined as drivers adapt.
Mercer County residents protest Green Valley Glenwood PSD request to stop stocking Bull Tail Hollow Lake also known as James P Bailey Lake. Critics cite trash and crowded parking while supporters urge continued stocking to provide fishing as a constructive activity for youth and disabled residents. Curtis Thompson of the Triangle Sportsman Club represented anglers.
In Roanoke Apco officials championed the Wyoming to Cloverdale 765kV transmission project inside the company office while protesters picketed outside a half day media workshop. Carl Pershing outlined the plan announced in 1990 and pending State Corporation Commission and West Virginia Public Service Commission approvals. Charles Simmons stressed the project serves Apco customers in Virginia and West Virginia, noting a 39 percent demand rise in 20 years. Bill Tanger called the line a symptom of broader issues, acknowledging its visual impact but defending its necessity and potential IPP access and power sale benefits.
