The Associated Press notes Class B and Class A boys share equal footing at the state tournament in Morgantown with four teams from each class in finals March 23-24. area eliminations precede the finals as 32 sectionals and eight regionals unfold before March 16 and 17 area contests.
Mullens, defending champion, leads Region 6 with a 17-3 mark as Gauley Bridge, Princeton, and other contenders vie in sectional play. Beckley’s ultra-strong program, led by Jerome Van Meter, is singled out as a top regional threat amid four area tournaments before Morgantown finals March 23-24.
Six-foot four Bill Matthews of Virginia Tech was named captain of the 1956 All-Big Six selections. He led Tech in scoring with 504 points and rebounding, breaking school records while earning top votes from writers, sportscasters, coaches, and peers.
Kevin Morris, a one legged goalie with an artificial leg, stars for Brighton High School. The 5 foot 9 inch, 145 pound athlete is praised for reflexes and leadership as he pursues college hockey at Dartmouth or Harvard and earns district league all star recognition.
The Piedmont League will disband effective today after a poor 1955 season and low attendance fears. Member cities include Hagerstown Maryland Lancaster Pennsylvania Lynchburg Virginia Newport News Virginia Portsmouth Virginia Sunbury Pennsylvania and York Pennsylvania Norfolk Virginia dropped out mid last year. York club plans to stay afloat as a corporate entity and Sunbury officials will meet to plan next steps.
Princeton Tigers close the 1956 season with a 111 91 victory over Mt. Hope. Rod Thorn leads with 64 points, Jimmy Sayers adds 26, Johnny Porterfield 16, and Roger Little 10 as 13 Tigers see action. Mt. Hope top scorers Dillon 26 and Frisk 25.
The 16 team State Collegiate Conference tournament starts today in Buckhannon West Virginia. Morris Harvey faces West Virginia State in the 1 30 p m opener with Bluefield State matching Concord in the afternoon session. The event marks a new era for West Virginia State and Bluefield State as league members.
New York report notes Missuel Berrios of Puerto Rico won a 10 round telecast bout by split decision over Bobby Bell of Youngstown Ohio at St. Nicholas Arena. Bell weighed 128 and Berrios 12742.
Giants open spring training in Phoenix with veteran pitcher Jim Hearn and rookie outfielder Billy Wells signing contracts. They were the last Giants to sign and terms were not disclosed.
The US tennis set down lessons from a poor indoor title. Don Budge and U.S. Davis Cup leaders, including Renville McMann and Bill Talbert, urged youth development while stressing the Davis Cup picture remains intact.
The Philadelphia Eagles announce the signing of John Rocky Ryan a 6-1 200 pound end from Illinois and John Erickson a 6-3 230 pound tackle from West Point for the 1956 NFL season. The team has 14 players under contract for next season.
Clearwater Fla Feb 27 General Manager Roy Hamey of the Philadelphia Phillies announced the signings of first baseman Marvin Blaylock and pitcher Seth Morehead. Only five of the Phillies 42 men remain unsigned. Blaylock 26 hit .206 in 113 games last season. Morehead 22, a southpaw, went 8 13 with 113 strikeouts for Syracuse.
Porterfield, acquired from Washington, predicted 18 to 20 victories for the Boston Red Sox after finishing with 10 wins last year. The right hander spoke in Sarasota as spring training began with 18 pitchers and five catchers reporting to manager Mike Higgins. others arrive March 1.
The Milwaukee Braves announced signing outfielder Billy Herman and pitcher Humberto Robinson Bruton in Bradenton Florida bringing the 40 under contract with five unsigned. Earlier the club re signed outfielder Henry Aaron.
Infielder Bobby Morgan and pitcher Marino Pieretti signed contracts with the Philadelphia Phillies. Morgan, a 2 year old utility infielder, was obtained from the Brooklyn Dodgers three years ago and hit .232 in 136 games last season. Pieretti, 35, formerly with the Washington Senators, went 19-15 last season for Sacramento in the Pacific Coast League.
In the first round at Tazewell, Pocahontas beat Tazewell 53 51, Haysi defeated Garden 78 45, and Honaker topped Richlands 80 60. Tonight Graham meets Cleveland, and Pocahontas faces Grundy in the nightcap.
In Minneapolis on February 27, Bob Blaik son of Army coach Earl Blaik was hired as an assistant football coach for Minnesota. Ray Malavasi, a former West Point lineman, was also named to an assistant post. Both are 25 and previously worked with Gopher coach Murray Warmath during Blaik's Army tenure.

In Florida the New York Yankees signed Maury McDermott and Don Larsen as pitchers report day opens. Four holdouts Whitey Ford Bob Grim Jim Konstanty and Tom Morgan have not signed, with two infielders and an outfielder also awaiting deals by March 1. Larsen's raise to 12000 came with conditions and McDermott plus 210 pound weight check add camp drama.
Jim Busby, 29, Texan, has regained 20 pounds and says he is ready to play center field for the Cleveland Indians. His 157-pound weight during a slump with the White Sox last season accompanied a .239 batting average. Busby plans to add five more pounds as 43 players reported to the Tribe’s opening workout, including Sam Mele and Duane Pillette who seek 1956 contracts.
In Vero Beach Florida on February 27 Don Elston 25 year old right hander from the Chicago Cubs via the Russ Meyer deal stood out in Brooklyn batters drill for the Dodgers. Elston who went 17 4 last season in Los Angeles impressed with a sinking fastball while Karl Spooner nursed a sore arm and a pulled Achilles tendon keeping him from other drills.
New York coach Vince Boryla of the Knicks was fined $50 by NBA president Maurice Podoloff for abusive language toward a referee after a 117 108 win over the Philadelphia Warriors in Philadelphia last Wednesday night.
Former world lightweight champion Ike Williams received a six months suspended sentence after a hearing noting he punched and kicked his estranged wife during an argument last month in Trenton New Jersey. City Magistrate Albert J. Cooper announced the ruling.
Venezuelan Luis Aparicio, age 21, rises as likely Chicago White Sox shortstop after Chico Carrasquel trade. Manager Marty Marion and Ted Lyons praise his defense and pace of growth, noting 273 in Memphis and 48 steals in the Southern Association, plus 321 in the Venezuelan league. Aparicio studies English to communicate with his manager and teammates and hopes to play for Chicago this season.
At Charlottesville on February 27 1960 coach Ben Martin began spring drills with 60 players including the first Black student George Harris a quarterback from Dunbar High Lynchburg on academic probation. Harris may not continue with the team as a freshman. Spring work focused on fundamentals ahead of the March 24 alumni game.
