Mine disaster at Wilcoe leaves six or seven dead
A Sunday gas explosion in the Grape Vine shaft of the United States Coal and Coke Company at Wilcoe killed six, possibly seven men. Hungarians Lawrence Hydon Mike Petershete and an unnamed worker and three colored miners Tom Minnie Tom Jefferson and John Woodford were among the dead. Rescue attempts were slow and dangerous as families waited nearby and crews worked to remove bodies.
