In Denver a 58 year old bus driver Jim Moffett was struck while helping two elderly women cross a snowy street. He suffered brain bleeding, broken bones, a dislocated shoulder and possible spleen rupture. Colorado State Patrol issued the ticket citing jaywalking as a contributing factor to the accident.

McDowell County Commission elected Judy Cortellesi as president at the second organizational meeting of the year amid a dispute over district residency that affected the 2008 election. Starting Saturday, West Virginia phone users must dial area code 304 before seven digit numbers for local calls. Public Service Commission representative Sarah Robertson said the change takes effect at midnight tonight and will apply to all local calls. Dialing 304-000-0000 will be standard for local calls.
West Virginians must dial the area code for all within state calls starting Saturday. The rule makes local calls incomplete without 304-prefixed numbers and some Mercer Mall visitors expressed mixed views on the change. Charles Allen, a mixed A-3 observer, weighed in.
U S Rep Rick Boucher announced the House approved an additional eight million dollars for the Grundy Flood Control and Redevelopment Project bringing total federal funding to over one hundred million. The funding goes to the Army Corps of Engineers to continue work benefiting Buchanan County residents.
Bob Lester, longtime Richlands band supporter and community servant, received the Richlands Area Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizenship Award at the annual membership meeting and banquet at Southwest Virginia Community College.
