Chamorro is set to take office April 25 amid a difficult transition and Sandinista opposition.
President Bush called Violeta Chamorro's upset win in Nicaragua a clear mandate for peace and democracy and urged a peaceful transfer of power from the Sandinistas. He also said U.S. trade sanctions should be lifted to help Nicaragua's economy and spoke with Chamorro by phone to offer congratulations.
Charleston AP report says the House approved an administration backed bill 65 to 32 to shift West Virginia from retail liquor sales to private operation. It would sell exclusive market licenses to the highest bidders and create a panel to regulate stores, affecting over 400 employees. The measure aims to raise about 20 million dollars for next year’s budget.
