United Auto Workers CIO issues formal strike notice under Michigan law targeting three Ford Motor plants employing about 95 000 workers. Union leaders say grievances remain unresolved but a strike is not yet certain while orders flow for Pratt and Whitney aircraft engines bombs and sub assemblies.
Charleston West Virginia February 26 The state food defense council will survey prices and price trends of eight basic food commodities within the next week. Current prices will be compared with those from a month and six months ago and with the 1935 39 national average. The report will be sent to the national defense council and covers at least 31 counties.
New York officials reported steel orders show potential full sell out for 1941 by May 1. Industry books are nearly filled for the second quarter with large bookings already seen for the third and even fourth quarters.
Berlin reported assault charges were filed in Sofia against U S Minister George H Earle after a bottle throwing incident during an orchestra performance The incident left Earle with a cut while witnesses testified to Bulgarian witnesses Officials noted Earle enjoys diplomatic immunity and no arrest or trial is confirmed in Washington
Charleston West Virginia February 26 Bills authored by delegates and senators seek a two percent use tax on mail order goods in lieu of the sales tax. The measure targets goods bought outside the state and shipped to consumers, with exceptions for taxed or resale items. The session also considers salaries for justices of the peace and a study court for state claims.
Police across the south hunt a hitch-hiker believed linked to two killings in Uniontown Pennsylvania. Victims Divvins and Florkiewicz were found shot near Bowling Green Virginia and beside a burning car near here. The FBI joins the probe as detectives trace a stolen Divvins coupe and a pistol sold to Florkiewicz.
In Washington the Senate clashed for nine days over the lease-land bill as Senator Chandler accused opponents of undermining public confidence in Roosevelt. Senator Wheeler fired back denouncing the president and asserting war aims, signaling ebbing patience in the long debate.
CIO workers at Bethlehem Steel Lackawanna plant in Buffalo strike as 9 p.m. deadline passes after three hours of talks fail. Picket lines at seven gates form around the two mile plant area. Union leader Lorne H. Nelles says 3,000 pickets to persuade non union workers. 3,000 to 4,000 second shift likely to stop working. Officials say defense orders and possible wider impact on Bethlehem mills loom.
Reports from Rome and Berlin describe the first meeting of Nazi and British mechanized detachments near Bengasi in Italian Libya. Italian high command notes German forces took up action after Mussolini's Africa announcement, with battles around Ageda and near Tripoli as Cheren and other fronts show continued fighting.
Cairo Feb 26 The British announced the capture of Mogadiscio the capital of Italian Somaliland and claimed control of 27 000 square miles. British forces advanced from Kenya and isolated Italian units by striking along the Juba river while seizing forts guns and prisoners.
German bombers struck a south Wales coastal town for hours dropping hundreds of incendiaries and high explosives. A church and a children's home were damaged, a girl students' hostel injured two. An estuary town near London suffered a strong attack with fires and many residents trapped. Rescue squads worked as fires were doused and debris cleared.
The German radio reported on CBS that Franz von Papen privately showed The Victory in the West to Turkish Prime Minister Refik Saydam Foreign Minister Sukru Saracoglu and other officials in Ankara during a dinner. The Turkish leaders were impressed by the military photography. the film depicts German operations in the Low Countries and France.
In Amsterdam on February 26, six civilians were killed and several wounded as police clashed with disturbers of the peace. A German report said ringleaders of nightly attacks on police and a secret Jewish organization were uncovered, with multiple arrests and a military administration imposed amid strikes and riots.
John L. Stoots, about 30, was seriously wounded by a bullet and treated at Memorial hospital Princeton after a reported shooting by his wife Notia at their home between Giotto and Lamar. She surrendered, waived a preliminary hearing, posted 1000 bond, and claimed self defense after a prior altercation. An investigation found moonshine at Clarence Stoots’s nearby home.
Foreign Secretary An y Eden and General Sir John G. Oo Dal met Turkish officials in Ankara today as Britain lines up actions in the Balkans. The party was greeted by Foreign Minister Saracoglu and other diplomats, with calls including United States Ambassador MacMurray and the Greek minister.
William John Sevastis, 64, Martins Ferry case employee, is executed in the electric chair at Ohio penitentiary after a deadly May 5 shooting spree. He killed his employer Mike Manos and two others, wounding more, in a rage over salary. sentenced to death by a three judge court for Manos murder.
Berlin reports a German long range bomber sank a 10,000 ton British bound steamer and damaged a 6,000 ton ship in the Atlantic. The Nazi raid focused on England’s west coast with a scouting plane said to have sunk a 2,000 ton vessel at the Channel entrance. A German air raid at Lympne caused a fire and gasoline stores to burn.
Chairman Jennings W Hobson predicts fund may reach near thirty thousand dollars as donations from Bluefield and surrounding areas flow in. Volunteers report progress beyond twenty four thousand with optimism for continued campaigning through next week and wider community support.
