Tazewell Va. board chair Bill Rasnick opposed closing Pocahontas High School and said final action rests with the county school board. He argued the move would be unfair to students as the district considers a $26 million county wide school renovation plan amid a new correctional center opening nearby.
A bill before the Legislature would require free clinics to dispense medications through a pharmacist, drawing concerns from area clinics serving the uninsured. Mercer Health Right Director Debbie Engik said she learned of Senate Bill No. 722 last week and began emailing Mercer County legislators to address funding gaps for pharmacist staffing.
The West Virginia Senate approved Senate Bill 291 on a 33 to 0 vote to add one of three new judges to Mercer County’s 9th Circuit Court. If the House confirms and Gov Manchin signs, a new judge would be seated Sept 1 2008 and eligible to run in 2010.
A second suspect, Mario Creed Goodson, 19, was arrested in Lodi, California in connection with the December 14, 2007 shooting death of 23-year-old William Jerome Flack at Packer’s nightclub in Green Valley. He faces first degree murder and conspiracy charges and awaits extradition decisions. Kenneth Dwayne Eaves, 19, is jailed in Beckley after surrendering February 6.
