Ferdinand E Marcos leaves the Philippines with Imelda and aides aboard U.S. aircraft to Guam after a military and civil revolt forced his resignation. Corazon Aquino becomes president signaling a hopeful new era. The party includes 55 Marcos group members and medical checks are planned in Guam before possible travel to Honolulu.
Marcos and family flew from Manila in American helicopters to Clark Air Base and on to Guam after he announced his resignation. Corazon Aquino addressed the nation, saying the long agony is over. Filipinos flooded streets in jubilation, raiding Marcos’s palace, while supporters clashed with looters. Washington confirmed the resignation and Shultz said Marcos would be welcome in the United States. Filipino-Americans celebrated Reagan’s handling of the crisis and pledged to press Aquino on human rights reforms.
Three decades after Aquino’s murder at Manila airport, the Philippines faces a financial crisis and worsening unrest. Ferdinand Marcos resigns as president, ceding power to Corazon Aquino, widow of the slain rival, amid a long era of modernization, insurgency, and corruption.
Charleston AP reports the state Tax Department estimates total business taxes in West Virginia would drop 5.8 percent under the 1984 tax revision. For the current year taxes would total 572,582,420 with all provisions in effect, versus 607,500,000 without the law. Big winners include general contractors 83.2 percent, service stations 86.5 percent, and hotels 84.6 percent.
West Virginia Governor Arch Moore proposes more than 1 billion dollars in new state debt to revive the economy amid weak revenues. He cites funding gaps and unpaid debts including turnpike bonds and unemployment compensation, with highway bonds as the main general obligation issue and other bonds to follow.
The Labor Department reports a modest 0.3 percent rise in consumer prices for January, driven by easing energy and food costs. Analysts expect further drops in oil prices to boost February. Durable goods orders edged up 0.4 percent, helped by military equipment demand, with manufacturing showing stagnation sans that surge.
Bluefield city board grants a March 15 parade permit to the Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan citing constitutional right to assemble. Grand Dragon George Thompson Jr. says participants will walk openly from 9 to 9 20 a.m. with no weapons or alcohol and will distribute literature.
